Hypnosis sex abuse

John Price, 82, of Bedale, North Yorkshire, was found guilty of 13 counts of indecent assault dating back to the s and s. Price, a widower who walks with a white stick and is cared for by his daughter, had denied the charges but was convicted after a trial at Teesside Crown Court. The court heard he had fashioned ways of being alone with the boys, who were aged between 11 and 17, then he indecently assaulted them. He claimed he could help them with stress, physical or emotional pain and used a cloak or blanket in the hypnosis technique.

The relevance of hypnosis to the treatment of sexual assault derives from two sources: the fact that hypnotic phenomena are mobilized spontaneously as defenses during assault, becoming part of the syndrome of posttraumatic stress disorder PTSD and the usefulness of formal hypnosis in treating PTSD. The role of dissociative defenses during and after traumatic experiences is reviewed; an analogy between the major elements of formally-induced hypnosis--absorption, dissociation, and suggestibility, and the major elements of PTSD--is drawn. Special problems relevant to sexual assault in childhood are discussed, including extreme self-blame and a profound sense of personality fragmentation. Uses of hypnosis in the treatment of sexual assault victims are reviewed, with an emphasis on helping such patients restructure their memories of the experience, both by reviewing them with greater control over their physical sense of comfort and safety and by balancing painful memories with recognition of their efforts to protect themselves or someone else who was endangered.

Whilst there is little authority on the admissibility on post-hypnosis evidence, there is a strong likelihood that such evidence will be deemed unreliable and inadmissible in criminal proceedings. Information obtained under hypnosis may be true or false. The technical term for false information is "confabulation". It is impossible to distinguish between the truth and confabulation, unless there is independent evidence confirming the information.
False memory syndrome FMS describes a condition in which a person's identity and relationships are affected by memories that are factually incorrect but that they strongly believe. The term is not recognized as a psychiatric illness [3] in any of the medical manuals, such as the ICD [4] or the DSM-5 ; [5] however, the principle that memories can be altered by outside influences is overwhelmingly accepted by scientists. False memories may be the result of recovered memory therapy , a term also defined by the FMSF in the early s, [10] which describes a range of therapy methods that are prone to creating confabulations. Some of the influential figures in the genesis of the theory are forensic psychologist Ralph Underwager , psychologist Elizabeth Loftus , and sociologist Richard Ofshe.
